Dr. Marc J. Philippon is managing partner of The Steadman Clinic and Co-Chairman of the Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail Colorado. Dr. Philippon specializes in sports medicine/hip disorders and their management with hip arthroscopy. He has performed over 5000 hip arthroscopies and has performed hip surgery in over 15 countries. He has treated over 1000 elite Olympic / professional athletes with hip arthroscopy and consulted on many others. Dr Philippon was born in Canada and came to the US on an athletic scholarship to play collegiate soccer. He returned to Canada to earn his medical degree with an academic scholarship from McMaster University Medical School (the birthplace of evidence-based medicine), in 1990. He completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital in 1995. Prior to coming to Vail, he was chief of orthopaedic surgery at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Director of sports related hip disorders and Director of the Golf Medicine Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He was also a Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of Sports Medicine/hip arthroscopy fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Philippon is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Pittsburg Medical School. In Vail, in addition to co-Chairman of the board, he is Director of Sports Medicine Fellowship and Director of Hip Research at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute. Dr. Philippon has trained over 100 fellows in the field of hip arthroscopy. He is a consultant to the National Hockey League Players Association, the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (Real Federación Española de Tenis) and to many other professional sports organizations. Dr. Philippon and The Steadman Clinic are designated medical providers for the United States Olympic Team. Dr. Philippon is also a Trustee with the US Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation; having treated many athletes from this organization.
Dr. Philippon is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and an active member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He is also a Fellow with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a Master Instructor with the Arthroscopy Association of North America, Masters Experience Hip Course, and an elected member of the Herodicus Society. He is a Founding Member of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy. He also reviews for numerous sports medicine and orthopaedic journals.
Dr. Philippon lives with his wife and three children in Edwards, Colorado. He enjoys spending time with his family and participating in sports such as golf, ice hockey, and skiing.
